Plenty


In an effort to make the most of local produce (and eat more vegetarian food in our house on a more regular basis), I find myself cooking more and more from books like the beautiful Plenty by Yotam Ottelenghi...if there was ever a book that would convince the most stubborn meat eater that they might just like to try vegetarian food then this is it...

This caramelised new potato (with Danish potatoes of course - they are very good at those!), tatin with goats cheese and roasted tomatoes (that's what the slightly darker bits are around the edge, I promise you it wasn't burned!), was one of those dishes that I thought we would end up eating between ourselves with the small people complaining how much they didn't like it, but I like being proved wrong (occasionally!) - they asked for thirds!

Also looking forward to the New Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall Book - Veg Everyday, which is out in a few weeks. If anyone can recommend any other decent vegetarian cookbooks to inspire me in the meantime, with recipes that don't make you feel like you are "missing out" on meat or fish, then that would be just great, thank you :)

  2. Yum! Looks delicious. I'm a huge fan of Ottolenghi and have his book 'The Cookbook', which I recommend. It isn't wholly vegetarian but if you like his style...

  5. That's exactly what I think too MM, we all need to cut down. Veggies are far greener and a lot more sustainable... One day I will have my own vegetable plot, one day! Emma :) x

  6. I can't believe that is potatoes is looks more like apricots or apples... Looks very nice.

    I have thought about cooking more vege dishes but i just love meat too much...

  9. Gasp! Another Ottolenghi lover :) For the same reasons as you, we have been LIVING out of Plenty recently. I haven't tried this recipe yet because I have a wheat intolerance and only indulge in it occasionally (and then really pay for it! but I have so little willpower when it comes to food)... having said that, we had the lemon and goat's cheese ravioli last weekend and they are, if you haven't tried them, HEAVEN :)

  10. Ooh, I am sure I saw a recipe for wheat free puff pastry recently, I will see if I can find it (you might need a few hours spare to make it though by the looks of things!). Will try the ravioli, they sound fabulous! Can recommend the mushroom lasagne, the brocolli and gorgonzola pie and the heavenly sweet potato fritters! :)

  11. Oh I am DYING to try the mushroom lasagne... I really need an excuse though - we only had the ravioli because we had guests :) (...for a three-course Ottolenghi extravaganza!) I love that you have made completely different things to me, I haven't tried any of those. In return, I recommend: the swiss chard, chickpea and tamarind stew; the curried red lentils; and the chickpea sauté. And the shakshuka. And oh gawd I made the chocolate cake from the other book for pudding last weekend (unnecessary) and it was... I wanted to marry it.

  12. They all sound delish, especially the curried red lentil - I am rather partial to the odd lentil! Hoping Amazon hurry up with the other book now. I NEED to make that chocolate cake! :)

  15. I have yet to try this recipe but love this book.Tried many recipes,all delicious.I am also wondering Hugh's new book.Irecently bought Innocent's Hungry and love it, not veggie but lots and lots of delicious looking recipes and tips.

  16. Thanks Isil, it's worth a try honestly. I am a huge fan of tatin though and if I could get away with it I would make an apple one for pudding! The innocent book sounds interesting too, thank you! Emma :)
